Why Syros

An island that lives all year

The island

  • The capital of the Cyclades

Ermoupoli is a living town, not a resort strip: marble squares, neoclassical mansions and the Apollo Theatre, with the medieval hill town of Ano Syros above it.

  • Easy to reach

About two hours by high-speed ferry from Piraeus, and short domestic flights from Athens (about 35 minutes; schedules vary).

  • In the middle of the islands

Syros sits between Mykonos and Tinos to the north and Paros and Naxos to the south, all a short ferry ride away.

Beaches

  • Azolimnos. Our bay, 70 m from the club: sand, clear water good for snorkelling, and tavernas and cafés along the beach.
  • Vari. A sheltered bay on the south coast with calm, shallow water and tamarisk shade; little Achladi is next door.
  • Galissas. A wide sandy bay on the west coast with shallow, sheltered water; the quieter cove of Armeos is a short walk away.
  • Kini. A fishing village on the west coast, known for its tavernas and its sunsets.
  • Agathopes. A lively cove on the south coast with a beach restaurant and a volleyball court.
  • The wild north. Grammata, Varvarousa and Aetos, on an empty coast reached by boat or on long footpaths.

Things to do

  • Walk Ermoupoli’s marble streets to Miaouli Square and the Town Hall, home to one of the oldest archaeological museums in Greece.
  • Catch a performance at the Apollo Theatre, a 19th-century opera house inspired by La Scala, which hosts the Festival of the Aegean and the Animasyros animation festival.
  • Stroll through Vaporia, where captains’ mansions rise from the sea beneath the blue dome of Agios Nikolaos.
  • Climb to Ano Syros and the Catholic Cathedral of St George for the view over the Aegean.
  • Take a boat to the beaches of the north coast, or walk its footpaths.
  • Take home a box of Syros loukoumi.
